COMPOST (#002)

taken down

There wasn’t a lot to choose from for the comp post this month. This one fascinates me though. Coming to you from Scumbag Productions in New Orleans is Dude That’s What I Call Punk Rock #4. Incase you’re wondering, all of the previous editions of DTWICPR have equally as bricky artwork. One of theme even states clearly “PUNKS ONLY” on the bricks. It’s also nice that there’s a statement at the top of the bandcamp page with a definition of punk from myspace circa 2004. What’s really remarkable though, is that this is just a mix tape of someones favorite songs. It’s like a mix tape I would have made when I was 13. It’s EXACTLY like a mix tape I would have made when I was 13! There’s some really good songs on here too. If you wanna shell out $23.40 USD (35% off!!!) it could be yours!

Doesn’t English (#002)

.

I guess there’s no French word for Interstices. I can’t see why there would need to be. I’ve sure as hell never used that word before, and I’m positive I never will again. Actually I think maybe it is a French word. I have no fucking idea, ok. Boy is it a good album though. Hailing from Toulouse, in Southern France (home of fancy bridges and Airbus), CHAVIRE, is a crumbly political emo band. Political Emo? Yeah, especially with lyrics as dismal  and poetic as these:

I walk. Mainly, I walk. We have used our saliva to speak of downgrading, to feel ourselves nowhere and guilty of history, and at every corner of the street, it is my cowardice that I catch and trail.

Throwback 13th (#002)

crimesanqposeeneneneENENwWWENENENWENQ_465_295_int

Remember when Crime played a show in a prison? If you’re not familiar, they were one of the OG punk bands from San Francisco. They were on the front lines of the first wave and they made a name for themselves as the band that always dressed like douchebag cops when they were on stage.

That’s what they did in the summer of 1978 when they performed at San Quentin State Prison in California. Some say they were wearing prison guard uniforms. Why? Yeah, I don’t know. Apparently their friendly criminal audience couldn’t figure it out either. “Nobody there knew what to make of us” said Hank Rank in an interview. I guess handing out show posters of a bare-assed dominatrix-style female cop to the inmates didn’t win them over, but I’m sure they came in “handy” if you know what I’m sayin’. In the video you do notice a few guys enjoying the show. A lot of confused faces too. I mean, what the hell is this?

FUN FACT: Hank Rank, later in life, produced the beloved Devil & Daniel Johnston documentary.

Top 5 Albums/EP’s That DONT Suck [MAY 2017]

a0689907179_10Briscoe – Good Time Riffs For Bad Times
There’s something so cool about a band that’s obviously super talented, yet clearly gives no shits about aesthetic. I mean look at the artwork. It’s like someone designed it on their cell phone while driving. Not a single trace of these guys on any social media platform. They’re a mystery band. They’re too focused on kickin’ out dope jams to care about much else it seems. I bet their live shows are stupefying, if they’re even together anymore. This could have been recorded 20 years ago for all I know.    Listen on Bandcamp

The only issues these guys are having is maybe some unhealthy side effects from a suck deficiency! Ok yeah, I tried way too hard on that sentence. This is my go-to sound for 2017. Between this and the new Courtneys record I’m set. Holy shit, this is cosmic dream fuzz.    Listen on Spotify or Bandcamp

The new Gnarwolves album was going to make this list, but after I listened to Clowns I was like “wow Gnarwolves suck”. Full disclosure, these guys are in no way affiliated with the Insane Clown Posse.. That certainly hasn’t stopped them from coming up with a stupid name for their band though. We’re going to overlook that because this thing rips. It rips so hard you guys. It’s like you’re thrashing the shit out of your skateboard on a gnarly curb guys. Just chewin’ it up. That’s how hard it rips.   Listen on Spotify or Bandcamp

a3936514190_10Underpass – Part Time Punk Sessions [Buy it on Amazon!]
I can relate to the part-time punk credo. It works for me too. It’s too hard being a full time punk without also being full-time homeless. For a gloomy gothic record, this thing really rocks. Occasionally it rolls too. There’s some good stuff coming out of San Diego right now. Here’s proof.    Listen on Bandcamp

The lyrics are like a lesson in eco-neurology. Is that even a thing? It is now, cuz I just said it, and these guys did an album about it. Not that you’re going to be able to decipher a single word of it through the ocean of static. This sounds like a negative review. It’s not. This is dope. See it’s positive now.    Listen on Spotify or Bandcamp
